Winston-Salem State University is a historically black constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system. Among my first projects after starting my business in 1983, I wrote the text for the 1984 annual report of the Winston-Salem State University Foundation. The project gave me the opportunity to interview Chancellor Cleon F. Thompson and a number of exceptional teachers and students.
Four years later, from June 1988 through July 1990, the chancellor retained me to write the case statement for a $25 million capital campaign and to write recruiting materials for new students. I also drafted the 1990-2000 Strategic Plan for the university and wrote speeches and presentations for the chancellor to deliver about the campaign.
