Health Care Providers Asked for Input on Redesigning North Carolina’s Mental Health Care System

Released September 29, 1999

On Saturday, October 23, dozens of family members of people with mental illnesses will gather at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro to consider the future of North Carolina’s mental health care system. In a day-long program of speakers and workshops, NAMI North Carolina will present its 1999 Fall Institute, titled “Redesigning the Future: Reforming the Public System of Care.”

The statewide grassroots advocacy organization hopes this year’s institute will attract health care providers as well as NAMI members, most of whom have family members served by the state mental health care system. “We feel it’s important for nurses, psychologists, social workers and others who care for our loved ones every day to have a voice in shaping the future of the system,” said Beth Melcher, executive director of NAMI North Carolina.

Among the guest speakers at the institute will be North Carolina State Auditor Ralph Campbell, Jr., who will discuss legislator-mandated studies of the state’s psychiatric hospitals and area mental health programs. Flo Stein, chief of substance abuse services for the state Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disability and Substance Abuse Services, will discuss the challenges of redesigning North Carolina’s mental health care system.
