Bruton to Address Mental Health Advocates

Hopes will be high this Friday morning when David Bruton, M.D., secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, addresses the 1999 Spring Conference of NAMI North Carolina.
Comprised largely of family members of people with severe and persistent mental illnesses, Bruton’s audience is well acquainted with the many, serious deficiencies of North Carolina’s mental health care system. While Bruton has acknowledged “huge problems” with the system in media interviews, NAMI members planning to attend the conference say they hope the secretary will arrive prepared to talk about specific plans for solving them.
“Mental health care issues haven’t been on anybody’s list of priorities for a long time, and it shows,” said NAMI North Carolina President Shirley Strobel. “After years of struggling with the system to get even the most basic care for our loved ones, we believe sweeping changes are long overdue. We hope Dr. Bruton’s keynote address will mark the beginning of a cooperative effort to build a mental health care system for North Carolina that really works.”
Bruton’s speech is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 9. The conference is being held Friday and Saturday at the Research Triangle Park Holiday Inn and is open to the public. For more information, call 919 788-0801 or 800 451-9682.
