Speech, Workshops Help Young Families Cope

Released April 16, 2001

George T. Lynn, a mental health counselor and author of two books for parents of children with serious emotional disorders, will present one of three workshops for young families at NAMI North Carolina’s Spring 2001 Conference next Saturday.

The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center in Research Triangle Park.

Following a members’ meeting, Saturday morning’s conference program begins at 9:45 with a speech by Jean A. Frazier, MD, on pediatric bipolar disorder and psychotic disorders in children. Frazier is director of the Child Outpatient Program at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Lynn’s 11:00 a.m. workshop, titled “Survival Strategies for Parenting Children with Severe Behavioral Challenges,” will focus on how parents can remain emotionally and physically healthy despite the stress of caring for their children. Inspired by his son, who has Tourette Syndrome, Lynn wrote Survival Strategies for Parenting Your ADD Child, published in 1996 by Underwood Books, Inc. In September 2000, Jessica Kingsley Publishers published Lynn’s second book, Survival Strategies for Parenting Children with Severe Behavioral Challenges. Lynn lives in Bellevue, Wash.

At 2:00 Saturday afternoon, Martha Kaufman, head of the Child & Family Services Section of the the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services, will present a conference workshop titled “Coordinating Services for Children.” Workshop participants will discuss building partnerships with providers and communities to promote best practices and better accountability.

Also at 2:00 Saturday, David A. Smith, MD, a psychiatrist in private practice in Chapel Hill, will conduct a question-and-answer workshop titled, “Ask the Doctor.” Smith is board-certified in child psychiatry and general psychiatry.
